Mac control key9/14/2023 ![]() OP says: It looks like at one time Apple did use ctrl instead of cmd, but changed it arbitrarily(?):Īrguably, the question should be asked in reverse: The Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V/etc shortcuts originated in the Xerox PARC prototypes for graphical user interfaces, which Apple adopted at the time they made the original Mac OS. The "Alt" key for example is standard ISO/IEC 9995-2, it was also around before Microsoft with Unix keyboards. Why just these two keys? Why not call delete "rmv," enter return "newline," fn "special," escape "abort" (these are all silly, but it illustrates my question).īut it isn't Microsoft's standard. I don't think it's just Microsoft's standard, but I could be wrong. It would help create an industry standard for software documentation (Photoshop, etc) Are they just being difficult (I'm not bashing Apple here, it's just an assumption), or does someone else own the patents on control and alt key names? ![]()
